Summer Essentials: Protection from Radiation

During school days, every kid waits for summer break. It is the time where one can go for adventures. Splashing the waters of the refreshing lake onto their face and enjoying swimming with their friends. It is the point in time when one forgets their worries and indulges in the moments of happiness.  And in summers, skin care is a must. As we all tend to be under the sun most of the time.

Nowadays, as there are environmental changes occurring, it is not safe to spend a large amount of time in the scorching sunlight. It is necessary to protect the skin from the harmful ultraviolet(UV) radiation that reaches the earth's surface. Skin cancer, sunburns, wrinkles and cataracts can be avoided if the skin and eyes are protected from this damaging radiation.

Safeguard the skin by going for that bottle of sunscreen. Earlier, it was concluded that UVA radiation leads to aging and skin wrinkles. But recent researches show that it can also cause skin cancer. While UVB radiation results in sunburn and skin cancer. It is necessary to have a sunscreen that will combat both the UVA and UVB radiation. The sunscreen has physical elements such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which is responsible for reflecting the UV radiation from the skin. There are chemical elements in sunscreen lotions which react with the radiation. It releases the heat before it penetrates into the skin. This is how a sunscreen functions when applied onto the skin.

The impact of the sun is at its peak when it has direct contact with the skin.  It is best to put on clothes that can give you protection. By opting for full sleeves and long pants when you are going out in the sun for a longer time, the skin is shielded and the penetration of the rays is lower. Cotton clothes help in better absorption of sweat. Darker colours seem to absorb more heat compared to lighter colours. So, it's best to stick to light colours in summer to remain cool.

Eye protection against UV Radiation is important as the incidences of eye-related problems are gradually increasing. High sun exposure to the eyes can result in cataracts, macular degeneration and skin cancer around the eyelids. It is the reason why sunglasses are preferred while on beaches, car rides and places where sun rays are present dominantly. Choose the wrap around type of glasses to gain complete protection. The dark coating of the glasses which has been certified to reflect the radiation is essential, so do not go for just any dark coated glasses.

Skin Hydration is imperative for good skin health. Drinking water benefits not just internal organs but the external skin as well. To keep the skin radiant and healthy, it is essential to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. It is best to monitor skin changes for the early detection of skin cancer symptoms. Preventive health check-ups will provide insights into the possible diseases due to sun exposure.

Summer skin care is of great significance. The only person who can take care of yourself is ultimately YOU!
