Common eye problems and foods that improve eye health

The below are the most common eye problems that occurs in us,

  • Presbyopia:

In this condition the close objects and small print looks unclear. The chances of getting presbyopia increase with age. It can be rectified by using reading glasses, Laser surgery and other procedures.

  • Dry eyes:

When the tear glands fails to make enough tears or make poor quality tears it causes dry eyes. There will be itching and burning sensation. In few cases, it leads in loss in vision. The ophthalmologist will suggest you humidifier or eye drops that works as real tears. A small procedure called ‘Lipiflow’ that uses heat and pressure will be done. Sometimes testosterone eye cream is also advised.

  • Tearing:

Tearing occurs due to sensitivity to light, wind or temperature. It may also occur due to blockage in tear ducts or eye infection. It can be prevented by shielding your eyes properly or wearing sunglasses.

  • Cataracts:

It is condition that is characterized by cloudy areas in the eye lens. The eye lens is important as it passes the light through the lens and images are visible. In cataract the vision will be unclear. When cataracts are big and thick there will be problem in the eyesight and it is removed through surgery.

  • Glaucoma:

When the pressure in the eye increases it leads to glaucoma. The pressure usually affects the optic nerve and causes problem. Glaucoma is also caused by eye infection, blockage in the blood vessels and inflammation in the eye.

  • Conjunctivitis:

The tissues that line up the eyelids and protects the cornea get infected and causes inflammation. There will redness, itching and discharge from the eye. Washing the hands properly and avoiding contact with the mouth prevents from the red eye.

  • Retinal disorders:

Retina is a thin lining that is present in the back of the eye and pass in the images to the brain. Common retinal disorders include, age linked macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and macular detachment.

Foods that helps to improve eye health:

  • As all of us know that carrots and other orange fruits that contains beta carotene aids to promote eye health and guards vision. The vitamins present in the fruits and carrots helps the retina and other parts of the eye to function properly.
  • Consumption of Leafy greens that contains antioxidants reduces the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.
  • Eggs are rich in lutein, zeaxanthanin and zinc. Regular intake of eggs lessens the risk of macular degeneration.
  • Citrus fruits and berries are rich in vitamin C and when consumed regularly prevents from macular degeneration and cataracts. It also improves overall eye health.
  • Almonds are good source of vitamin E. When it is consumed daily the risk of developing macular degeneration is lowered.
  • Fishes like tuna, salmon, trout and mackerel when consumed prevents from dry eyes. They are rich source of DHA which prevents the eyes from drying out.
